About Kalangan

A small house of handloom

Kalangan Home Textiles is a women-led handloom company based in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. The word कलांगन—kalā-aṅgan— means “a courtyard of art.” That is what we are trying to build, both in the cloth and outside the front door.

A short history

Eight years of Kalangan

2018
Began travelling through weaving clusters after graduating from NIFT.
— Most days were spent on the road.
2019
Started a small setup from one room at home with three women.
— The work slowly found its pace.
2020
The pandemic paused travel and production across many clusters.
— Everything suddenly felt distant.
2023
Returned to the Uttarakhand villages and restarted weaving work gradually.
— Some looms had been silent for years.
2024
Kalangan slowly started becoming more than just an idea.
— The work began finding its direction.
2025
Expanded into handwoven scarves stoles and custom textile projects.
— More yarn more conversations more weaving
2026
Twenty-two women, two villages, this website.
— Still building slowly and carefully.

Note from the Founder

Why कलांगन began

Kalangan grew slowly through years of travelling working with weavers and understanding handmade textiles beyond the finished product.

What interests me most is the process around weaving the people, the routines, the homes and the quiet labour behind every textile.

What we believe

Six things we will not change

  • 100% Natural Fibre

Every textile is developed using natural fibres chosen for comfort, texture and longevity.

  • Hand-spun yarn, where we can.

Mill yarn for warps when needed; takhli-spun for everything else.

  • Maker’s name on every piece.

Stitched in chain stitch, in the lower corner. Not stickers, not tags.

  • No discounts, ever.

The price is the price. We would rather make less, slowly, than make more on a sale.

  • Profit stays in the valley.

Daycare, savings group, library, loom service. The cluster runs the cluster.

  • If in doubt, weave less.

The slowness is the product. We don’t scale; we deepen.
