Neema Devi and Fifteen Years of Weaving

Neema Devi has been weaving for nearly fifteen years. She lives in a small village in Uttarakhand and travels long distances to work often beginning her mornings before sunrise.

A mother of five daughters and one son her days move between home responsibilities family and the loom. Yet every time she sits down to weave there is a quiet focus and consistency in her work that cannot be taught quickly.

Over the years Neema ji has worked on countless scarves stoles and woven textiles with us. Her understanding of rhythm texture and patience comes not from formal training but from years of lived practice.

Her home is modest her routine demanding but weaving continues to remain an important part of her life and livelihood. Many of the pieces that eventually travel to cities homes and celebrations begin in spaces like hers quietly carefully and by hand.

At Kalangan we often speak about handmade textiles but behind every woven surface is also a person a family and years of invisible labour. Stories like Neema ji’s remind us why slow processes and human relationships matter.
